Gently introducing art to our clients
What can I do to gently introduce art into the coaching is a question I often get asked and I find it is comes from two places.
Confidence
The first is the coach doubting themselves and feeling a little underconfident in bringing in the deeper ART in Coaching approach. Easy ways in makes it easy for me the coach.
Assumptions
The second is an assumption that the client won’t want to work this way. Perhaps underestimating the client and also giving the coach a way out of having to explain and work in a space they feel underconfident about bringing art in to…
However, this latter point is important because there will be clients who struggle with the prospect of drawing, painting, and creating an image (2D or 3D) from scratch. This will get in the way of the client creating anything meaningful and devalue the coaching. This is where having easier ways in is important.
Easy ways in
There are a number of easier ways in such as cards, objects and simple mark making which I will be sharing with you in upcoming posts. These approaches will be familiar to you, however, I also want to share how you can expand them into a deeper connection for your client using the ART in Coaching approach.
Building a client’s confidence
The ways in are accessible, quick, and recognisable building a client’s confidence in using visual language and working with imagery as an insightful and beneficial approach to their reflection and exploration. It also encourages them to value their own visual language.
In service to your client
So, as long as introducing easy ways into art is in the service of your client and not yourself(!) then it is important to have some things we can offer.
